Interactive Wayfinding
Project Overview
Yee Hong Centre's South Asian wing serves residents with varying levels of cognitive ability. The challenge was to help residents confidently navigate beyond their rooms while creating an environment that felt culturally familiar and meaningful to the community it serves. Rather than relying solely on traditional signage, the design focused on creating intuitive visual cues that residents could recognize and follow naturally throughout the corridor.
What We Did
- Developed a destination based navigation system using a culturally familiar South Asian bird
- Designed a progressive bird sequence that transforms as residents move through the corridor
- Used the bird's changing actions to guide residents toward key destinations such as the dining room and activity space
- Incorporated culturally relevant visual references that residents could easily recognize and connect with
- Designed environmental elements that complemented the existing South Asian inspired flooring and architectural character of the wing
- Created visual destinations that encouraged residents to venture beyond their rooms and engage with shared community spaces
- Integrated cultural storytelling throughout the corridor to strengthen identity and sense of place
Outcome
The corridor became more than a route between rooms. It became a journey that encouraged movement, exploration, and engagement. Residents could follow the evolving bird sequence as a visual guide, helping them navigate toward important destinations without relying solely on written signs. By grounding the design in familiar South Asian references and aligning the environment with the character of the space, the corridor felt more intuitive, welcoming, and culturally connected. The result was an environment that supported orientation while encouraging residents to participate more actively in daily life beyond their rooms.
