Door Camouflage Strategy
Project Overview
Within Yee Hong Centre's South Asian wing, several service and exit doors were being mistaken for destinations, creating confusion for residents living with cognitive impairment. The objective was to reduce the visual prominence of these doors while preserving a welcoming and culturally cohesive environment throughout the corridor.
What We Did
- Designed custom door wraps that visually integrated with the surrounding environment
- Reduced the prominence of exit and service doors without creating an institutional appearance
- Extended the surrounding environmental design seamlessly across each door
- Maintained visual continuity throughout the corridor while supporting resident orientation
- Ensured the door designs complemented the South Asian inspired environment and nearby destination features
- Balanced safety, functionality, and aesthetics within the overall corridor experience
Outcome
The redesigned doors blended naturally into the surrounding environment, making them less likely to be perceived as destinations while maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Rather than relying on restrictive or highly visible deterrents, the solution used environmental design to subtly redirect attention toward meaningful destinations within the home. The result was a safer, more cohesive environment that supported resident orientation while preserving the character of the space.
