Cultural Destination Environments
Project Overview
The corridor murals were designed to transform long hallways into meaningful destinations rather than simple transition spaces. Inspired by culturally significant South Asian landmarks, the murals created recognizable places that residents could identify, connect with, and enjoy as they moved throughout the home. The goal was to encourage exploration beyond resident rooms while creating moments of familiarity, comfort, and conversation along the journey.
What We Did
- Designed large scale corridor destination murals inspired by the Golden Temple and Taj Mahal
- Selected culturally significant landmarks that would be familiar and meaningful to South Asian residents
- Transformed underutilized corridor walls into recognizable destinations for rest, reflection, and social interaction
- Integrated the murals with the overall corridor navigation strategy to reinforce resident orientation
- Designed each mural to create a distinct identity within the corridor rather than treating every hallway the same
- Used environmental storytelling to encourage residents to explore beyond their rooms
- Created welcoming spaces where residents and families could gather, reminisce, and engage with familiar cultural imagery
Outcome
The corridor became more than a pathway between rooms. It became a series of recognizable destinations that encouraged residents to move, pause, and connect with their surroundings. The Golden Temple and Taj Mahal murals provided familiar cultural landmarks that supported orientation while creating opportunities for conversation, reminiscence, and social interaction. By introducing meaningful destinations throughout the corridor, the environment became more engaging, more memorable, and more reflective of the community it serves.
